The Best Time of Year to Paint a House Exterior in Charleston

Published on March 3, 2026

In a review published on the VMS Home Painting homepage, a homeowner wrote that the crew put two coats on the exterior of their new home in about a day and a half, took the shutters off and covered the neighbors’ cars while they worked.

That is the real scheduling question for most houses: not which season, but whether you can count on a short run of dry, mild days, with nights that stay above the paint’s minimum.

The short answer for Charleston

For most Charleston-area homes, the best time of year to paint a house exterior is mid-April through May and October through early November. Those months combine daytime highs of roughly 70 to 84°F with the fewest rainy days of the year. Summer works with careful timing; winter works on mild stretches with the right paint.

Charleston’s year, month by month

The table uses NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Charleston International Airport. “Rain days” counts days with at least a tenth of an inch. “Cool nights” counts nights that drop below 50°F, the usual minimum for standard latex paint.

Month Avg high (°F) Avg low (°F) Rain (in) Rain days Cool nights
January 60.2 38.9 3.37 5.8 26.4
February 63.8 41.6 3.05 5.1 23.0
March 70.1 47.3 3.35 5.2 18.6
April 77.1 54.5 3.29 5.4 9.4
May 83.6 63.0 3.32 5.1 1.2
June 88.5 70.4 6.21 8.4 0
July 91.3 73.7 6.60 9.4 0
August 89.8 73.1 6.97 8.9 0
September 85.4 68.3 6.01 6.8 0.1
October 77.9 57.7 4.33 4.6 6.6
November 69.4 47.1 2.66 4.0 19.1
December 62.7 41.6 3.35 5.7 24.9

Read it this way. June through September brings the most rain days and highs near 90°F. October and November have the fewest rain days of the year. December through March has comfortable afternoons but many nights below 50°F.

What the paint makers actually require

Every product has its own range on the label and technical data sheet, but the major manufacturers publish the same core rules.

  • Temperature: Benjamin Moore’s temperature guide plans exterior work between 35°F and 100°F, with 77°F as the optimum.
  • Dew point: the same guide calls for a surface temperature more than 5°F above the dew point.
  • The next 48 hours: Sherwin-Williams’ exterior application FAQ says the temperature should stay in range and above the dew point for at least 48 hours after application.
  • Evening moisture: most products need at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture settles on the surface, so cooler days mean stopping earlier.
  • Direct sun: both manufacturers advise against painting in direct sunlight, especially in hot months.

Is summer too hot to paint in Charleston?

Not by itself. Charleston’s average July high of 91.3°F sits inside the 35–100°F planning range. The trouble is the surface: Benjamin Moore notes that a wall in direct sun can be much hotter than the air, and Sherwin-Williams warns that sun-heated paint dries too fast, leaving lap marks and weak adhesion.

Summer painting works when the crew follows the shade around the house and starts each wall after the morning dew has burned off. The bigger summer risk is the afternoon storm, since June through August averages 8 to 9 rain days a month.

Can you paint outside in October?

Yes, and in Charleston October is one of the best months. The average high is 77.9°F, the average low 57.7°F, and only 4.6 days in a typical October bring a tenth of an inch of rain or more. Fewer than 7 nights a month drop below 50°F.

The caveats: hurricane season runs through November 30, and fall mornings bring heavy dew. Start once surfaces are dry and stop early enough for the paint to set before evening.

How late in the year can you paint here?

Later than in most of the country. November still averages a 69.4°F high and the fewest rain days of the year, though about 19 nights fall below 50°F.

From December through February, standard latex is a risk on many nights. Sherwin-Williams notes that traditional latex needs temperatures above 60°F to cure properly, while some of its exterior lines can be applied and cure down to 35°F.

With those products, a mild winter week can work: check the label minimum, then the forecast lows for the next two nights.

Hurricane season and the afternoon storm problem

The National Hurricane Center’s climatology page sets the Atlantic hurricane season at June 1 to November 30. A named storm can wipe out a week of exterior work, and the cleanup afterward takes priority over painting.

Afternoon thunderstorms matter more on an ordinary summer job. If rain hits paint before it has dried, Benjamin Moore says the surface may bubble; leave the bubbles alone, and if they don’t settle in a day or two, scrape, sand and repaint those spots.

What matters more than the month

A perfect October week does not help if the wood is soft or still wet. Sherwin-Williams recommends waiting at least a day after a heavy rain and making sure the surface is dry before painting. Any rotted trim should be repaired first; our guide to repairing rotted wood before painting covers the order.

Booking also matters. If you want a specific window, ask for your estimate early so the prep and repairs fit before it.
